Home Security Tips – Part 2

The best home security advice for your property is to speak to us at Milex Locks & Security who would be happy to review the security of your home.

In the meantime, let’s take a look at Part 2 of our Top 6 Milex Home Security Tips for a safer and more protected home for you and your family.

Part 1 of our guide can be read here.

  • Safely Secured

Home safes have become popular again over the last few years, so you might want to consider asking a specialist locksmith to specify and install a safe for your home

  • Secure French Doors and UPVC Doors

You may to consider installing bolts at both the top and bottom of your French doors or perhaps add sash jammers to UPVC doors

  • New Keys?

While you are reviewing your security it is also worth considering when your keys were last replaced?

It is possible past owners or tenants may still have access to your home and who knows who might have a copy of your keys.  If you are worried, ask Milex to change your locks and fit a patented system, whereby keys can only be copied with proof of ownership.

  • Bad Habits

Always be aware of your homes security levels and ensure you don’t indulge in any bad habits such as leaving keys in locks or in view. Always set alarms, change codes frequently and locking any side or back gates. Being vigilant of these aspects will drastically reduce the chance of a thief gaining access to your property.

  • Protect the Shed!

Make sure you source a good quality lock to protect your garden shed and what’s inside. Don’t run the risk of your lawnmower and gardening equipment going walkabout.

  • Never leave car keys in full view!

Statistics show that thieves are increasingly breaking into homes to steal car keys, so don’t make it easy for them by leaving keys in view. We are all guilty of coming home, shoes off and the car keys put down on a side table near the front door. Make it difficult for the potential burglars, take your keys upstairs or leave them in your jacket and put the jacket in a place out of view.

Home Security Tips – Part 1

The best home security advice for your property is to speak to us at Milex Locks & Security who would be happy to review the security of your home.

In the meantime, let’s take a look at our Top 6 Milex Security Tips (Part 1) for a safer and more protected home.

  1. Review the Exterior of Your House

Always start by reviewing the exterior of your property to ensure that no windows are broken and to check that conservatories or garages don’t allow access to your home. Always check that any ladders or tools are put back safely after being used – don’t leave an opportunity lying about for a potential thief.

  1. How secure are your Doors and Windows?

Speak to a fully qualified locksmith to make sure all of your windows and doors have the most appropriate locks, while also ensuring they are in a good condition, fitted properly and match up with the small print on your home insurance.

  1. Beware of Opportunist Burglars

Burglars and thieves are undoubtedly opportunists and will target homes that look empty, so you should consider installing time switches around the house so it looks like people are always at home. There are also Wifi plugs and switches available that can be operated via your Smartphone (both IOS and Android via IFTTT) even if you are away from home.

  1. Sensor lights and the back & front!

Sensor lighting to the front and back door of your home will definitely put off any potential burglar and aid you getting into your home during the darker, winter months. Also make sure that switches or timers are placed in rooms upstairs as well as downstairs.

  1. Change the code – make your alarm effective!

We definitely recommend you having an alarm installed in your home, however always change your access codes on a regular basis and never tell anyone what it is. Alarms are incredibly effective but only if you use them properly.

  1. Be safe and aesthetically pleasing at the same time

If you have any side windows on your property, perhaps consider having the glass replaced with toughened or reinforced glass to prevents thieves from breaking and entering to steal car keys or a wallet that has been left lying about. Attractive bars and grilles can also be bought and placed in front of windows without affecting the aesthetics of your home.
